History of the Kaaba & Masjid al-Haram
The First House of Worship
The Kaaba is the first house of worship built for mankind, as mentioned in the Quran:
"Indeed, the first House [of worship] established for mankind was that at Makkah - blessed and a guidance for the worlds." (Quran 3:96)
Construction by Prophet Ibrahim (عليه السلام)
Around 4,000 years ago, Prophet Ibrahim and his son Ismail were commanded by Allah to rebuild the Kaaba:
"And [mention] when Ibrahim was raising the foundations of the House and [with him] Ismail, [saying], 'Our Lord, accept [this] from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.'" (Quran 2:127)
The Maqam Ibrahim
The stone on which Ibrahim stood while building the Kaaba still bears his footprints and is preserved near the Kaaba today.
The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad)
According to authentic hadith:
- The Black Stone descended from Paradise
- It was originally whiter than milk
- The sins of mankind turned it black
- It was placed in the Kaaba by Prophet Ibrahim
Pre-Islamic Era
Before Islam, the Kaaba housed 360 idols. The Quraysh tribe maintained it but had corrupted its original purpose.

- Destroyed all 360 idols
- Restored the Kaaba to monotheistic worship
